Sushi is one of my favorite foods of all time. I like the taste of sushi and the texture is just wonderfully made. One time, I went to a sushi restaurant and ordered a dish that I didn’t understand what it really meant. Well, they brought out raw salmon fish for me, right in front of my face. I was freaked out actually because I never thought I would eat raw fish. Besides, I heard a story in Japan that there was this man who ate raw fish all his life and got worms in his brain because raw fish had worms. Isn’t that scary? But despite that story, I still like sushi. The reason I eat sushi is because I don’t really see the raw fish. You know, sushi is just a tiny tiny little guy and you don’t always make out what is in the thing that you eat. Well, I’m writing this because I don’t know too much about sushi and I guess lots of people don’t out there. If you are a sushi expert, just ignore my post.

That doesn’t stop me from going to Japanese restaurants after the incident with raw salmon. In fact, a few weeks after that incident, I went to a restaurant and ordered raw salmon (this time I knew what I was going to get) and I loved it. I expected myself to broaden my horizon sometimes and this turned out to be a good experience. Raw salmon tasted nothing like cooked salmon. They are soft and sweet and tasty. I was surprised when I ate it, to tell the truth.

I went to this restaurant called “Suhsushi.” When you walk in, a waiter would ask you if you want to dine in or take out. I said I was going to dine in. They allow you to take whatever seat you are comfortable seating in.  Then they bring you a bowl of miso soup. They have regular and spicy soup which is actually regular plus Sriracha.

I ordered Kim chi noodle soup which has eggs, seaweed, udon noodles and some other ingredients that I couldn’t make out. It tasted great. The spiciness of the dish is really complimentary in this cold weather in Colorado. One thing I particularly like about this dish is the fact that it has eggs in it. It was quite surprising to see how eggs tasted so good with spicy soup.

So I went back another day to try out some of the sushi that they have. They have about 12 different kinds of sushi and I’m just not an expert so I ordered spicy tuna (because I like spicy).

It didn’t taste very spicy unless you eat it with the ginger on the side. The mustard was very spicy I couldn’t handle it. Eating raw tuna is kind of fun because it doesn’t really taste like anything . I was not even feeling like I was eating fish.

Eating sushi makes me feel like I’m appreciating fine arts. They are so delicate and even eating them causes you to be delicate as well. Using chopsticks to pick a sushi up is quite an art if you are not so familiar with using chopsticks.

Then I saw a flame going up from a table next to me. It was quite impressive. The flame heated the sauce inside a aluminum foil. So I ordered it as well. It’s called Broncos sushi (not sure why it got that name but it was on sale the day I went there).

It was basically rice with shrimp. The only thing that was off was the sweet sauce. It was a little too sweet for me (even though I have a sweet tooth). The shrimp itself was cooked perfectly and the sushi tasted okay without the sauce.

Anyway, I know I have been rambling too much about Suhsushi. I’m not sure this is a chain restaurant but if you live in Fort Collins, CO, you should pay a visit to the restaurant someday. There are so many Japanese restaurants out there and if you are a little adventurous, why not eat out once in a while and try out different ethnic cuisines? It brings you a little different perspective on what is good food in different parts of the world.



Oh boy, who doesn’t love hamburger? But hang on a second, where would you go for a good burger? Chain, fast food restaurants seem like the place people go to. But McDonalds? Well, it’s cheap but the food is subpar. If you don’t agree, I understand. I used to eat there all the time!

Red Robin seems to be a better place for a good burger. Though it is expensive and you know when you go to a sit down restaurant, you have to tip which is 15% of the already high prices.

What about Five Guys? Personally, I like the fries there. The hamburger is fine, but i would not go as far as to say it is best burger place.

Good Times is kind of the same as Five Guys. Classic American restaurant with a catching name. Good Times!

Carl’s Jr actually has awesome bacon burgers. I think prices are about 5-6 dollars (a little expensive for a burger, ha). But it’s worth the money. I used to eat to gain weight (i used to be skinny) and I ate their bacon burger all the time. Now I don’t need to gain any weight so I stay away from this unhealthy diet.

My first encounter with Burger King was when I spent a night out in Denver. It was pretty cold outside and I didn’t have lots of clothes on me so I went to Burger King, considering it as my sanctuary. Their burgers? Well, they are okay. If you just want to a quick meal, let’s go to Burger King.

The last restaurant I have been to is Stuft. Honestly, after eating there, I had to go on Facebook to like it. I think Stuft is an upscale restaurant like Red Robin but personally I prefer Stuft to Red Robin (but it’s just me, you can have a different opinion on that).

Well, I haven’t been to so many burger restaurant but hope that helps if you try to navigate through thousands of burger restaurants from coast to coast.


Who wonders and is curious about the taste of calamari. I recommend go to a grocery store to buy a pack of calamari to try. It’s worth it!

Here I offers a simple recipe for calamari, mussels and pasta shells.

You can just buy a pack of shells at a grocery store like Sprouts or any grocery stores. This package comes with a pack of powered cheese but we will not use that in this recipe.


1 Pack Shells (7.25 oz)



You can change the quantity of each to whatever you want.



Boil the water.


Get calamari out of the box (can be bought at Walmart) and pat them dry with paper towels.


Get mussels out of the box with the garlic butter sauce. Mussels can be bought at Walmart. If you buy mussels without the sauce, you can just boil water and put mussels in for about 4 minutes.


Boil mussels on high (with the sauce).


Grease the pan with butter and fry calamari. I recommend frying it because it tastes much better than boiling.

Water is ready for the noodles.


Calamari seems to be ready. About 4 minutes.


Put mussels in a plate and enjoy.


Pour pasta and calamari in a plate and enjoy! Sprinkle with some salt and pepper as desired.

Fried Chicken

This is a very simple recipe with main ingredients are chicken, salt, pepper, breadcrumbs and an egg. I cooked this for myself but got leftovers. If you want to cook for 4-6 people, you can just increase the quantity of the ingredients.


1/2 lbs chicken breasts

1 egg

2 cups Panko breadcrumbs (but really you can use whatever breadcrumbs you have)

Olive oil

Salt and pepper to season



Cut the chicken into halves.


Season with salt and pepper


Beat an egg into a half-bowl. Pour breadcrumbs onto a plate.

Heat olive oil in a skillet


Immerse the chicken halves into the egg and roll them on breadcrumbs.


Put the chicken in the heated skillet.


Cook about 4 minutes per side.


Here we go! We have fried chicken in about 10 minutes and super cheap.


Chicken Stroganoff

Oh boy, it’s getting late and people get hungry. So do I. I decided I will make something quick, cost-saving but fancy enough to enjoy the art of cooking. Finally, I came across this recipe on Food Network, though I have simplified it to make it plausible to make at home for beginning cooks.

Let’s start with the ingredients. As you can see, I have elbows, paprika, olive oil, flour, onion and chicken. This recipe is supposed to do with egg noodles but I don’t have them in my pantry so I decided to sub elbow noodles for them. It worked out pretty well! But if you have egg noodles, go ahead and cook them.



12 ounces elbows
1 small onion
1 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon paprika, plus more for topping
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup fat free, low sodium chicken broth

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.



Add the noodles and cook as the label directs (about 7 minutes for elbows), then drain.


Meanwhile, chop the onion.



And cut the chicken into strips.


Put 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion.


Cook the onion until slightly soft, about 2 minutes.

Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil


, the chicken,




and flour.


Cook, stirring, until the chicken browns, about 3 minutes.

Oops, I forgot salt and pepper. But if you remember, you can add them with the chicken.


Add the chicken broth and bring to a gentle simmer;


cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Continue simmering gently until the chicken is cooked through, about 2 more minutes.


Put the noodles on a plate and top with the chicken mixture and paprika.



Oh man, I have to tell you that I love the taste of this. It’s the sweetness of the onion and the juiciness of the broth that make this dish so delicious!

Hamburger Helper

While in college, we all want to have something really cheap and easy so that we don’t have to spend tons of time cooking it. Besides, college budget isn’t really much to go on with. But even if you are not in college, every once in a while, you want to go for something cheap and fast, something that tastes okay but doesn’t require any skills to cook it. I think today is the day I feel like doing something that I can be sure costs minimum amount of money. I chose Hamburger Helper.

Ingredients are really simple

4 and 1/2 cup water

1 lb ground beef

Hamburger helper box


The thing I like about hamburger helper is that it is really cheap. About $1.75 and 1 lb of beef about $2.78. Both you can get at Walmart. And it is very simple, no special skills or equipment needed. The only things you need are a skillet, a spatula, measurement cups (even if you don’t have those cups, you can just eyeball it, it doesn’t have to be precise), and a strainer (to dry the beef after cooking it)

So you cut open the beef cover and put it in a skillet


You are going to cook the beef until it is brown.


Pour beef and its sauce into a strainer to dry the beef. One tip for making the  beef less greasy is use hot water over the beef for a few seconds. A lot of grease will come out of the beef and leave it dry and healthy!


Put the beef back in the skillet and pour water over it. Open the noodle bag and put noodles in. Open the sauce mix and put it in the skillet.



Bring the whole thing to a boil and reduce heat to simmer and wait about 12 minutes for the noodles to cook.


And there you are, you have a meal with only $4.53 and ready in about 20 minutes! Besides, you can have leftovers for future days. How great is that!


Teriyaki Rice with Salmon

Ever went to Tokyo’s Joe and custom ordered a rice dish with salmon. Well, I did and chose thai curry to go with it. But i don’t have coconut milk in my pantry so I think i might do something different. I use Teriyaki sauce to make up for the magical wonders of coconut milk. (I consider Teriyaki my fav sauce – it’s sweet, you know). Ingredients are very simple and minimal in this dish.

2 cups brown rice

1 cup frozen broccoli

1 salmon fillet (from frozen fillet bag)

2 tablespoon store-bought Teriyaki sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil


Put brown rice in a microwavable bowl and add 5 cups of cold water. Place the bowl in the microwave and set the timer for 30 minutes. In the meantime, unwrap salmon fillet and place it on a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Bake salmon for 25 minutes at 400 degrees.

Place well-done salmon on a plate. Drain rice with a strainer and transfer rice onto a skillet and sprinkle with olive oil. Stir gently for about 5 minutes.



In the meantime, put broccoli in a microwavable bowl and add 2 cups of cold water. Microwave for 6 minutes.



Sprain broccoli and transfer broccoli onto the skillet with rice. Sprinkle with Teriyaki sauce and gently stir them all up for about 2 minutes.




Transfer rice and broccoli to plate with salmon.
